Nobuhiro Watsuki wrote and illustrated the manga Rurouni Kenshin. From 1994 to 1999, the series was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump, then from 1999 to 2003, it was serialized in Shueisha’s Jump Comics Deluxe. It tells the story of Kenshin Himura, a fictionalized version of the historical character who was a former assassin during the Bakumatsu period who transforms into a traveling samurai in Meiji era Japan, protecting the people from evil and vows never to kill again.

Studio Gallop adapted the manga into an anime series, which ran on Fuji Television from 1996 to 1998 and was licensed for release in North America by Media Blasters. Three original video animations have been developed as prequels to the anime series. In addition, two anime films have been made, with a third set to be released in early 2014. Several video games, including two for Sony’s PlayStation consoles, have been released, as well as more than a dozen different types of Rurouni Kenshin goods, including more than 40 CD soundtracks, action figures, model kits, trading cards, and video games.

Rurouni Kenshin Plot

The story begins in Japan in the 11th year of the Meiji period, when the fallen shogunate’s samurai have been replaced by “rōnin” (masterless samurai) and have taken over  the country as bandits. Kenshin Himura, once known as Battōsai, is now a peaceful wanderer who has surrendered his sword following the murder of his wife and has become a pacifist. While returning from an errand, Kenshin meets Kamiya Kaoru, a young woman who is looking murderer of her father.

Kenshin saves Kaoru from an assassin named Yukishiro Enishi, so Kaoru invites him to stay at her dojo for the time being in order to ensure his safety. Although he is first hesitant to disclose his true identity for fear of being compelled to kill again, he eventually accepts when he discovers that Kaoru has taken refuge in the home of her father’s killer. When Kenshin learns about Kaoru’s mission to avenge her father’s death at the hands of Enishi, he promises to assist her on the condition that she never fights Enishi alone. Kenshin gradually realizes that Kaoru has grown into a strong and independent young woman who has fallen in love with him.

  1. Where are you getting these extra episodes? Every source I find (including my own DVDs) only list 95. I don’t have every episode title memorized, but the count is definitely off.

    1. These episodes are OVA’s.
