Naoto is a good person who is determined to change to save his sister as an adult. He has a no-nonsense demeanor and rarely finds it amusing when others make comical advances, especially Takemichi. As an example, he is open to the idea that Takemichi can time-leap, and is even willing to form his theories about it.

He has an average mindset and personality as a child, but he has demonstrated intelligence and the capacity to read social cues as seen when he repeatedly hopped on the spot to hear the clinking of his remaining coins as directed (or rather, intimidated to do) by a trio of delinquents from another school.

If it weren’t for a certain blonde-haired kid’s intervention, he would’ve probably given the rest of his coins in exchange for booze.

Naoto’s skills and abilities:

Naoto is a skilled detective with great deductive abilities. He can quickly put disparate pieces of knowledge together to generate a comprehensive picture. Because of his position, he has access to a vast amount of knowledge that the typical individual cannot. This has been a huge help to Takemichi in his efforts to alter the past and build a better present.

Naoto’s history:

Despite some boys bullying Naoto, Takemichi Hanagaki can pursue them. Takemichi advises Naoto to be more self-assured and to resist giving in, as this will frighten the shoddy punks away. Takemichi instructs Naoto to look after his sister after learning that Naoto is Hinata’s younger brother.

He also shares the fact that on the same day in 2017 he accidentally fell onto the railway tracks and spent 12 years in prison. He reveals that Hinata and Naoto will pass away on July 1, 2017; therefore he must keep that date in mind and defend his sister. Takemichi shakes Naoto’s hand when Naoto responds that he takes this seriously.

Toman Arc:

Takemichi is rescued by Naoto from the train track incident. Naoto discloses that Takemichi time-traveled and altered his fate so that Naoto could save him when Takemichi comes to the station’s medical facility. Naoto says that despite his intense study efforts and promotion to a police officer, he was still powerless to save Hinata, who perished. After that, Takemichi agrees to Naoto’s request for assistance in rescuing his sister.

Naoto advises Takemichi that he must meet the top two members of the Tokyo Manji Gang, Manjiro Sano, and Tetta Kisaki when he returns to the past 12 years because he is unable to go back on any dates he chooses. According to Naoto, the current Tokyo Manji Gang would not exist and his sister wouldn’t have to die if those two had never met.

Naoto notes that Takemichi told him he traveled back to the present after shaking hands with Naoto, and he feels it’s the trigger as Takemichi wonders how he will fare. Takemichi is told by Naoto that Manjiro and Tetta became together in August and that he needs to hang out with one of them to keep them apart. After shaking hands, Takemichi goes back in time to 12 years.

After mistakenly shaking Naoto’s hand in the past, Takemichi shakes it again in the present. Naoto questions whether anything has changed but becomes enraged upon finding it was an accident. He then discloses that they had learned a new lesson:

If he spent a week in the past, he would also spend a week in the future, and his body would continue to be in suspended animation. When Takemichi says he met Manjiro Sano, Naoto wonders why he didn’t kill him and considers that, had he been able to, he would have done so. Takemichi suggests that they see Manjiro to find out the reason for Toman’s transformation from him.

Naoto concurs. Naoto notices a person he doesn’t recognize as they browse through documents to try and figure out how to locate Manjiro. Atsushi Sendo was now a part of Toman’s elite group. Since Atsushi was incarcerated for stabbing Masataka in his timeline, and after his release, he was merely a no-name punk, Naoto finds it unusual.

They decide to phone Atsushi to ask him to set up a meeting with Manjiro after realizing Takemichi must have changed the past after he met Manjiro. Atsushi requests a private conversation with Takemichi despite his efforts to set up a meeting. Atsushi ultimately commits suicide, and Takemichi instructs Naoto to investigate the death of Ken Ryuguji on that day because it was Tetta Kisaki who made Toman nasty. Then Takemichi decides to help everyone.

Final thoughts:

Additionally, he obtained sensitive data regarding the location of the Tokyo Manji Gang. Takemichi’s efforts to save Hinata and others have benefited greatly from his ability to acquire information and make deductions.
